PMG Added to Jilks Construction Scorpion Pier Replacement Project
Pacific Maritime Group is proud to join the team at Jilks Construction as they work tirelessly to replace the Scorpion Pier on Santa Cruz Island. PMG is being used to shuttle heavy lift equipment and project vehicles from Long Beach to Santa Cruz using the ramp barge PTS-185 and delivered fuel, materials, and equipment using the landing craft Sea Scout.
The permanent replacement pier will be wider and more secure, providing safe, accessible, efficient, and sustainable access for visitors to Santa Cruz Island. The pier was a temporary structure that could not be used by park or concession boats during exceptionally low tides when the water level was too low. The project is scheduled to close in December, and PMG will use the PTS-185 to haul away vehicles and equipment for a return to Long Beach.
Deteriorating Scorpion Pier on Santa Cruz Being Replaced
Tens of thousands of visitors cross the Scorpion Pier every year to enjoy a wide range of recreational activities on the beautiful Santa Cruz Island. The pier at Scorpion Anchorage had been using a “temporary” flatbed railcar since 2000.
The pier had been in major disrepair from deterioration caused by saltwater and the constant pounding of waves. As a steward of the Channel Islands off the Pacific coast of southern California, the National Park Service hired Jilks Construction to replace the primary accessway for visitors landing at Santa Cruz Island. The community is looking forward to the new pier opening after months of closure during the replacement process.
“The (former) Scorpion Pier was only intended as a temporary and relatively low-cost solution for providing urgent access following the park service’s 1996 acquisition of the east end of the island,” according to the environmental review document for the new pier.
